Heart to Heart

Chip off the Old Block

I am counting down the weeks until we leave for South Carolina again. Our daughter Elisa is letting us come down and be squatters with her over the winter, since the lake home is really still a cottage, if you know what I mean.

When we tell others about our plans they are pretty shocked that our 25 year old daughter would do this for us. They always ask us, ‘What does her husband say?’, and that’s when we have to laugh and tell them there’s no husband…or boyfriend. However, if she starts to date when we are staying with her, the guy will probably think that she still lives with mom and dad. That’s when she’ll have to drop the bomb and tell him, ‘No, Mom and Dad live with me’! It won’t take long for him to figure out that next to God, family means everything to us.

Elisa came out of the womb hearing the sweet message that Jesus loves her. We had Christian music playing in the birthing room when she was born, for we did not want to miss a second on training our new little one about the things of God. The Bible says: Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart - Proverbs 22:6. That promise was kept─we trained and she did not depart.

Elisa was always hearing little sermonettes from us during her wet cement years. For instance her dad and I always encouraged Elisa to get out of the box and rub shoulders with non-believers in order that God could use her to win souls. We wanted her to be a missionary in her own backyard. However, we were careful to remind Elisa that she must always be the influencer in these relationships, and not the one being influenced.

But the sermon that was preached the most in our house was from her father and it was in regards to her future husband. It went something like this…Elisa, I don’t care what he does, what kind of car he drives, or even what he looks like…but he’s got to KNOW JESUS!

I can honestly report on both accounts she has not let us down. The way that I see her influence the people around her is amazing. Often her students in the public school say, “I want to be just like Miss Chwialkowski when I grow up”.

And when it comes to that future husband…she is still waiting. The Lord is not slow in keeping His promises, as some understand slowness - 2 Peter 3:9. Some days are harder than others for our dear daughter as she waits. Nevertheless, Kirk and I are more confident than ever there is one special dude out there somewhere…we just don’t know his name yet.

Often people ask us, “Is Elisa more like her mom or more like her dad?” My answer to that is: “She looks more like me, but she acts more like her dad”. However, when it comes to living out her faith in a radical way…she is like the both of us. She is definitely a chip off the old block!

Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord,
the fruit of the womb a reward.
Psalm 127:3
