Homeschool Helps
by Mike McHugh
The basic needs of a Christian home do not change simply because a family chooses to home school. In fact, anyone who has home schooled his children can testify to the fact that the extra pressures that come along with the commitment of home education make it all the more critical that the foundational needs of the home be properly addressed.
If you are home schooling now, or thinking of doing so in the future, you may well be asking, “What are the fundamental things that our home needs to prosper?” The list that follows, along with the accompanying Scripture proofs, should provide parents with an understanding of the top ten things they need in their homes.
- God’s presence is needed (Psalm 127:1; Colossians 3:17)
- God’s Word is needed (2 Timothy 3:15-17)
- God’s salvation is needed (Isaiah 53:6; Acts 2:38-39)
- Worship of God is needed (Deuteronomy 4:10; 6:5-7)
- God’s wisdom is needed (Proverbs 3:5-6)
- A proper husband-wife relationship is needed (Genesis 2:24; 1 Corinthians 11:3; Colossians 3:18-19)
- Obedience to parents is needed (Ephesians 6:1-3; Colossians 3:20)
- Youthful piety is needed (Ecclesiastes 12:1; 1 Timothy 5:4)
- A godly balance of love and discipline is needed (Proverbs 22:6-15; 23:13-14; Ephesians 6:4)
- Proper financial stewardship is needed (Proverbs 3:9-10; 1 Corinthians 4:1-2)
Too often, home school parents make the same mistake as other parents when they neglect to address the foundational needs of their families and focus instead on things that are eternally insignificant. The question that more families should ask is found in Psalm 11:3 “If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?”
It is only when parents make the effort to establish their home upon the priorities that God Himself has ordained, that such parents will be prepared to run a Christ-honoring homeschool program and, indeed, do anything great for King Jesus.
