One Woman's Pilgrimage

Bigger this and more of that
Nasty wants wrapped in “I need”
Newer, better, more improved
N’eer the wrappings, it’s still greed

A pair of shoes to match that purse
I haven’t got a thing to wear
Extravagance don’t mean a thing
When third world country feet go bare

Faster laptops, shiny cars
Books, CDs and gourmet meals
Redecorate, upgrade, expand it
Numb your conscious till you can’t feel

The little empty spot inside you
The whisper of the Voice within
That lovingly reminds you softly,
“My child, greed is still a sin.”

“What can I do? The world’s so big
What kind of difference could I make?”
Besides, I’ve got much less than others
Lips justify, and then you take

That credit card, the numbers worn
And off you go to buy some more
Ah, retail therapy feels so good
Until at night, you close the door

And suddenly, it doesn’t matter
The thrill of sales and bargains dim
It’s just more stuff to clean and own you
You sit, still empty, alone with Him

“I’m all you need”, with tenderness
He speaks into your heart, so clear
“Just put me first, and trust in Me
Release the “things” you hold so dear

I’ll fill you up with Living Water
I’ll bless you with the Bread of Life
I’ll teach you how to let “stuff’ go
I’ll loose those chains, I’ll calm that strive

The TV, print and media ads
All tempt you to want more and more
Reject their lies, release it all
And wait to see what I’ve in store

Contentment, joy, and room to breathe
A life that’s focused now on Me
The peace of wanting less awaits
When I am your priority

I’ll teach you how to handle money
I’ll teach you how to spend your time
You’ll learn how much of life awaits you
Without you spending one thin dime

The treasure of the life well spent
You focus now is heaven-faced
“… the things of earth grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace…”
