Sing a New Song
Date Posted: May 6, 2018

David inspires us to sing a new song in Psalm 96. Beautiful call to action. I’m pretty sure David isn’t talking about the newest praise song that has seven words and seven repeats.

Sing a new song. The Hebrew reads exactly that – a fresh, new song or singing, or new singer.

Isn’t it amazing that God gave us capacity to use the octave of notes on eighty-eight keys and our voices to create eons of new songs? There are so many songs in the Bible, but the music to those songs is lost. That doesn’t mean the songs are lost, though because they have been recorded in Heaven.

We know this because in Revelation 5,14, they sang a new song – past tense, already happened. So interesting that the Old Testament looks forward to sing and the New Testament makes a past tense statement that it is already done.

And they sang a new song, saying: "You are worthy to take the scroll, And to open its seals; For You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation, and have made us kings and priests to our God; And we shall reign on the earth." Revelation 5:9-10 NKJV

So it’s a done deal. But in Revelation 14, the new song that the twenty-four elders sang couldn’t be learned by anyone other than the 144 thousand. The words of their song are not recorded. One may wonder what the words are, how they effected the singers, and to whom, besides Jesus, did they sing this song?

So back to Psalm 33—we sing a new song because (4) the word of the LORD is right, And all His work is done in truth.

In Psalm 40, David received a new song: Praise to our God; Many will see it and fear, And will trust in the LORD.

Psalm 96 gives us the new song to sing. I’d love to hear the music along with these lyrics. I want to hear the trees singing and the sea roaring in total honor and praise to God Almighty and not because of a hurricane!

Psalm 98 is another new song with beautiful lyrics. The reason? For He is coming to judge the earth. With righteousness He shall judge the world, And the peoples with equity. I literally tremble at this thought, and am so thankful I have been covered with the blood of Jesus.

God is David’s Rock and Fortress in Psalm 144. David is awed with the question, “What is man that you take notice of him?” He lifts up a new song in praise that God is his lovingkindness, mighty fortress, high tower, deliverer, shield, and refuge.

How can we not fall on our faces singing praises to the Almighty in thankfulness?

Right after this in Psalm 149, there is a darker new song written for us to know that God prepares us for battle. There is a written judgement that that will be executed by all the saints. What a deep responsibility that God gives us. This deserves deeper study.

Then Isaiah chimes in chapter 42 with a command to the mountains, the coastlands, the wilderness, the cities, Kedar and Sela inhabitants to sing a new song, a song of judgment.

These new songs are not just praise and honor to God, they also give us assurance in His power and refuge. They reassure us that His lovingkindness to His children will never fail. We can rest assured and never have to sing that "Somebody done me wrong song," because His faultless judgement will consume the wicked and no one will ever escape except those who are hidden in His heart and engraved in His palm.
