Refreshment in Refuge

Thy Word

I'm cheating a bit here today. I've lifted the ending of this column from my blog from last month. However, in studying this week's Sunday school lesson (we are studying Ezekiel), I noticed something spectacular. I hate flashbacks, but I must back up two weeks to give you the whole picture. I am expounding my study on the Crowns of the Believers to put it in book form. In my study I ran across an online discussion of Bible archeology where the Believers were in stark contrast to the Human Reasonist camp. The general consensus of that camp is that we should not necessarily believe the Bible because it is full of errors which archeology cleary highlights. Since modern science is so much more accurate than any ancient, uneducated author could possibly be. That's was the shout down from the scientists who did not believe the Bible is the inerrant Word of God.

This week I learned that archeologists pointed out for years how errant the Bible (specifically Daniel) was because the last king of Babylon was not Belshazzar, but Nabonidus for in all their digs and research there was no record found of Belshazzar, and especially no record of Belshazzar seeing the hand writing on the wall... Until 1853. Uncovered in the digs of a temple was a cuniform where Belshazzar is described as Nabonidus' eldest son, co-regent of Babylon.

After scientists had erred in their judgment of the book of Daniel, God triumphs in all His glory to reveal to foolish mankind that, indeed, His word is true, holy, and divinely breathed.

One night when I couldn't go to sleep, I tried to count up how many books I've read in my lifetime. I wasn't counting the books I've read 2 to 4 times, nor did I count my Bible that I read constantly. I was actually surprised at the number of books. In fourth grade, there was a book ruler on the wall, and every time we turned in a book report, our marker would move along the ruler telling the world how many books each of us had read. But my journey began long before that in second grade when I read that whole reader in a single night of homework, and was crucially bored the rest of the year while the others caught up with me.

That's when I learned how essential story flow is, and how crucial it is to keep the reader's interest.

It is something wonderful how the Bible manages this feat no matter how many times one reads it all the way through. God has buried gold nuggets on every page. As you mature in your spiritual walk, you uncover more and apply them to your life for riches beyond imagination. I marvel every time I open my Bible (or call it up on my computer screen). Only God could breathe something so perfect, and only God can reveal all its truths in all their nuances.

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.

2 Samuel 7:21 For Your word's sake, and according to Your own heart, You have done all these great things, to make Your servant know them.
