Refreshment in Refuge

Why all these troubles...

Have you read Psalm 107 lately? Ages ago, I made a startling discovery. I’m sure you did, too, when you read it last.

There is a wondrous progression in this Psalm that astounds me. From Moses leading the Children of Israel out of Egypt into the wilderness where the Israelites wandered, to the sinful living during the times of the Judges, to the exile to Babylon, to the disciples’ dangerous voyage across the Sea of Galilee when Jesus spoke to the storm and it died to glass like stillness, to the peace and abundance of the thousand years of peace. And finally, the release of Satan from the pit so he can bring the unbelievers “low through oppression, evil, and sorrow,” to when Jesus pours contempt upon the princes of the air (Satan and his demons) to make them wander in trackless waste. The all the upright see every bit of it and rejoice while wickedness shuts its mouth.

The Psalm ends with this, Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things; let all consider the steadfast love of the LORD.

What I find astounding is that three quarters of this Psalm had not happened yet when it was written.

How can we not love and trust this perfect God who sees all, knows all, is all powerful, and is so mindful of His children that He comforts and protects us even when we are faithless. He remains faithful because He cannot deny Himself!

Jesus allowed that storm to almost overwhelm His disciples just as He allows storms to almost overwhelm us. Be aware that God allows things that are far too intense and too awful for us to handle because He knows we need it in order for our faith to blossom and grow! He knows those storms are weathered best on our knees. He knows the future. He knows His children. And His children know His voice. Love and trust and faith are the healthy result of God’s children’s life storms.
