Affirmation Received With Graciousness
Date Posted: February 14, 2010

Have you ever given someone a sincere compliment and they come back with a negative reply about themselves? For instance; David says to Kathy, “You did a great job teaching today, you explained the passage very clearly.” Kathy replies, “No, I did awful, I could have done better.” Instead Kathy should accept the compliment with a simple, “Thank you.” Not only did she devalue the comment of David who took the time to give her healthy feedback on her teaching, but she also devalued herself. Paul lifted up Timothy over and over again to others. We do not read anywhere that Timothy spoke to Paul and said, “No Paul, I am not a good person. I am not a workman approved by God.” Instead we read of silence, on Timothy’s part. I believe he graciously, quietly and humbling accepted the words that Paul spoke of him.

The definition to be gracious in the Webster dictionary is having or showing kindness, charm or courtesy. I believe that graciousness can be shown at times in silence and with acceptance of what another speaks of us. It can be shown with a nod of a head or even a handshake.

Thought- Is it possible that when Timothy heard the words that Paul spoke of him, that he quietly told Paul thank you? We will never know, but I believe we can not only learn from what is written, but what is not written. A common saying of mine is, “Silence speaks, loudly.”
