An Ice Storm Brings In Unity
Date Posted: December 28, 2008

This is a looking back to our ice storm in 2008. In the last week we experienced a snow storm, ice, thunderstorms, and flooding. It is a time of coming together once again. God seems to use the weather to bring us together. Whether it is 2008 or 2014.

A week before Christmas a storm arrived in our City! The rain began and the temperature dropped which caused the rain to turn into ice and blanket our trees, homes, streets, cars and electrical lines. All things that we as American's take for granted stopped! Our electrical system across our city began to fall apart. The heavy ice brought electrical lines to the ground leaving thousands of homes in the midst of the cold weather without electricity. Many stoplights no longer worked and were turned into 4 way stops for safety. Heating systems in homes were unable to operate. Shelters were opened in a school and in a local event arena for those who had no heat or electricity. Crews arrived from near and far to assist in the clean-up and in the repair. Our city began to work together to repair the damage. The electricity in my home began to function within a few days and I felt greatful for God's intervention and the hands that repaired the damage. Yet, although my electricity was restored thousands were still without heat or electricity. I was restless with all of this going on in my city and feeling helpless in regard to assisting. In the midst of my restlessness I made a phone call to our local Red Cross who were operating the temporary shelters for those in our city and surrounding area. For 1 day I became a volunteer assisting those in the shelter. I learned that time seems to stand still when serving in an area of need like this. The stories were many and thankfulness was extended from all we came in contact with. Although a sermon was not shared, or any type of christian formal teaching, Jesus Christ was present in the midst of the Red Cross volunteers and others.

Many times it has been said, "I would rather see a sermon than hear a sermon." Such was the week before Christmas in our City in 2008 when people from many walks of life came together for a few days.

Psalm 133- How wonderfull it is, how pleasant, when brothers live together in harmony! For harmony is as precious as the fragrant anointing oil that was poured over Aaron's head, that ran down his beard and onto the border of his robe. Harmony is as refreshing as the dew from Mount Hermon that falls on the mountains of Zion. And the Lord has pronounced his blessing, even life forevermore.
