Going to War With The Wise
Date Posted: September 20, 2009

Many times we search out someone to assist us in making decisions of life. We may be in the midst of something that we are not sure of the direction to take or we may be in need of confirmation that what we are about to set out and do is wise, or that the direction is unwise. As Christians it is wise to seek wise counsel from those who are Christians. According to scripture victory depends on having many counselors. “A wise man is mightier than a strong man, and a man of knowledge is more powerful than a strong man. So don’t go to war without wise guidance; victory depends on having many counselors.”(Proverbs 24:5, NLT)
The descriptive word for counsel in this verse is wise man, and wise guidance. This means as Christians we are not to go to just anyone who happens to be near us, but to seek the wise counsel of many. When going to war a soldier desires those around him who are above him in authority to know that they will make wise decisions when their life is at stake. God never directs us in his word to consult the unwise and those who are evil. In fact the word is very clear in describing the counsel of the wicked in Proverbs 12:5; The plans of the godly are just; the advice of the wicked is treacherous. God’s desire is for our good. He desires us to succeed in this life. “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11, NLT.
A wise person who counsels us will be interested in what is best for us. 2 Timothy 3:16-17, is a very good guideline for us to discern if the counsel we are being given is wise. All scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right. It is God’s way of preparing us in every way, fully equipped for every good thing God wants us to do. We must ask ourselves, “Does the counsel I am being given line up with scripture?”
We must also remember that the Lord is the final counsel in our life. Psalm 16:7-9, “I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I have set the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.”
