Importance of Listening
Date Posted: October 4, 2009

This morning I am reminded of a scene in the children's story, "Alice in Wonderland." The rabbit says, "I'm late, I'm late for a very important date. No time to say, hello, good-bye, I'm late, I'm late!" Contrast this scene with the Jesus we read about in the gospels of the New Testament. Can you visualize him running around in circles? Can you see Jesus looking at you and saying, in a hurry up tone of voice, "Sorry, I have no time for you. I have other more important things to do. I'm late, I'm late, I'm late." Your reply may be, "Please Jesus, it will only take a few minutes. I'm really hurting right now and I need someone to talk to who will listen to me." Do you think Jesus would reply? "My apologies, you are important to me, but I don't have the time right now. I'm late, I'm late, I'm late."

The Jesus we know from the Bible does not tell anyone he doesn't have the time to listen. Yes, he slipped away to pray, to have quiet time with the Father, but when he was with people, they were his priority. I can hear him speaking with compassion, "I really need to be alone right now. I'm tired and I'm weary, but I'll listen to you when I return, but in the meantime I will pray for you to the Father. You are important to me." Jesus shows he cares, by listening first and then replying in love. (1 Corinthians 13)

Listening and speaking go hand in hand. In order to help someone first we must listen, then we must be slow to speak. We must not assume we know what is going to be shared. Part of healing is finding someone who will first listen, without interjecting opinions or teaching. Then as the Lord leads we are to speak.

The challenge for this week. Ask God to help you become a good listener. Next, if words are needed, after listening to someone, ask the Holy Spirit to give you words from the Father to speak. The Holy Spirit may use you to bring healing to the persons soul. From 1 Corinthians 13...but have not love, I am only a resounding gong, but have not love, I am nothing, but have not love, I gain nothing...without love, prophecies will cease, tongues will be stilled and knowledge will pass away.
