Stepping Out Into The Unknown
Date Posted: November 8, 2009

As leaders many times we must step out into the unknown. As we step out, this means we are also taking people with us as we venture ahead. It is during times of change and stepping out that as leaders, we must spend time with God and listen closely to his guidance through the word, prayer and the voice of those around us.
In God’s word we read of many people, both men and women, who as leaders stepped out into the unknown and took others with them. God did not always reveal all of the details of the journey. Moses was one such person. The Lord told Moses to lead the people, but did not tell him who he would send with him. Moses said to the Lord,” You have been telling me, lead these people, but you have not let me know whom you will send with me.” (Exodus 33:12) I can hear Moses speaking these words to God with a loud exclamation point at the end of his sentence! Moses desired more information, but at this point God was not giving Moses more information! Later God did give Moses the information he requested, but I believe it was not what Moses was looking for. I believe that Moses was asking God for a person. Instead he was told, “My presence will go with you and I will give you rest.” (Exodus 33:14) Moses was to continue to lead the people and God promised that he would go with him.
As leaders in today’s world we can be a lot like Moses. We want all of the information on paper in front of us in 1,2, 3 order before we step out on the path that God places before us. Yet, if we hesitate for to long we may miss what God has for us as a leader and what he has for those who are following us.
May we be encouraged by the words that God spoke to Moses as we step out as leaders and take others with us. The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you and I will give you rest.” (Exodus 33:14)
