The Footstep Traveler, Beauty From Ashes
Date Posted: October 17, 2010

A couple of weeks ago, as the Footstep Traveler, I once again moved to a new neighborhood in my city. Although I am familiar with this neighborhood, there are still always people to meet, changes that happen, new people who move in and others that move on. Neighborhoods are people.

I became the Footstep Traveler by necessity a few years ago, when I could no longer afford a vehicle. I learned something new when I lost my vehicle. I learned that this city does not welcome those of us who do not have vehicles. We are not a city that see's public transportation or walking as a viable way of life. Many times others may treat us as second class citizens. This shines through clearly in how people talk down to those without vehicles. It is almost like living in a type of caste system. During times when it is necessary to ask for a ride somewhere, I have experienced the rolling of eyes, impatient looks, and unkind words. Yet, as the Footstep Traveler I have learned to trust God. Instead of asking, unless it is an emergency I trust God to get me to where I need to go. He always shows up just in time. He is never late.

As I walk my new neighborhood, it has given me time to contemplate my life in this city. It has not been an easy life for me living in this city. I've sat and listened to many sermons, in many churches. I've been caught in denominational cross fires. I've been tugged from side to side, where people and yes, leaders think I need to be delivered from the other! Yet, as the Footstep Traveler, I have learned many things in this city. I've learned a lot about myself, mainly who I do not desire to be and who I am in Jesus Christ.

I've walked through this cities - streets as a sales consultant, connecting with the corporate world. I've experienced a paycheck in my pocket. When life changed the corporate world disappeared and I wondered where my next meal would come from. I wondered where I was going to live without a steady income. I experienced my phone being shut off and watched my car being towed away. I've experienced, the cold, hunger, no air conditioning, the cold, rejection and even been threatened a few times. I've cried oceans of tears when abandoned by friends and at the death of loved ones.

As you read the experiences of my life as The Footstep Traveler you may ask yourself, what did she do wrong to have all of these things happen in her life? You may ask yourself why is she sharing this with her readers, but just maybe the question we should ask is what did she do right and how could God use all of the tragedy in the life of one woman?

As the Footstep Traveler who has lost everything that the world sees as valuable, I learned to stand in the midst of opposition.I learned to continue forward surrounded by what I call the Pharaoh's of my life. I learned to go to God first and then he sends his chosen people to help. I've seen God move in what looked like impossible circumstances. I traveled to Africa and am preparing for another trip to another country. I've written news articles on my experience, was recently published in a Gospel Magazine, presently I am a writer for Global Prayer digest, attended seminars and learned how to work within today's technological world.

The Wasteland; To some after reading this my life may look like a wasteland, but to God in the midst of this he was weaving a beautiful tapestry using my life and intersecting it with the lives of others. He continues to use, those who love me, those who despise me and those who reject me, to push me closer to him and trust him more and more each day. There is a wind of change going on in my life, I believe in a short time I will be leaving this city. I don't know when, where or how, but will continue to trust God and know that his timing will be perfect.

For my readers; Remember these words were not only written for people of yesterday, but written for us today. To all who mourn in Israel, he will give beauty for ashes, joy instead of mourning, praise instead of despair. For the Lord has planted them like strong and graceful oaks for his own glory. Isaiah 61:3.

What the enemy uses to try to destroy God will turn it around to use it for the good! When God comes along and parts your Red Sea be sure to step into the water and he will carry you through and across.

Lord, lift up my friends today. Show them with you there is hope. Give them a glimpse of your fire! Help them to see through the struggles of life and see that they are not alone. Just as you brought the Israelites through you will also bring them through.

Traveling with you,

Nancy J.
