Waiting When We Should Be Moving
Date Posted: August 23, 2009

Have you ever sat in a long line of traffic waiting for it to begin moving again? Have you ever sat in your own car, as a passenger of someone else, or on a bus, waiting and waiting and waiting? The wait seems to go on forever and ever. Or better yet, someone gives us directions to a specific location and we know for a fact that the directions are the long way to get to the location, but we don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings so we follow their directions knowing that this is the long way around and it causes us to wait for a long, long time.
There are times in our life that the wait we are experiencing is not because of our decisions, but the directions of others. We think the directions are from God and make the decision to follow; slowly we begin to see that the directions are definitely not from God.
A few years ago a group decided to pray for me on the subject of the vision for the outreach part of this ministry. The words that were prayed were that I was not to move forward to reach people, but I was to wait. Other words were spoken along with this that were devastating to me at this time in my life. They caused me to doubt the path that God had placed me on in regard to visiting another country. I was in wait mode when I should have been continuing forward. As I waited I began to see that the words that were prayed and spoken to me were not from God, but from people who were trying to sabotage the growth of the ministry. The words spoken in prayer sabotaged my forward movement.
What did I, and can others learn from this story of my life? As we move forward on the path that God places us on we must learn to be very discerning and use wisdom in regard to words that are spoken to us that take us off the path God places us on. For two years I ran in circles, lost focus and direction. To many voices, and my not spending enough time seeking the will of God, by listening to the Holy Spirit caused me to make decisions that were wrong. When this happened I became very timid and began to live in fear, that I may make the same mistake again. My trust factor of others died. Yet we must remember that we are not to shrink back even though we listened to the wrong voices. For God tells us in Hebrews 10:37-39; for in just a very little while, “He who is coming will come and not delay. But my righteous one will live by faith. And if he shrinks back, I will not be pleased with him. But we are not of those who shrink back and destroyed, but of those who believe and are saved.

My prayer for us all- Lord, help us to not shrink back but to continue forward. Please bring those into our lives who care about us and speak words using discernment, filled with wisdom and guided by the Holy Spirit. Send people our way who assist us in staying on your path for our life and lift us up when we fall down. In the precious name of Jesus, Amen.
