The Way of the Righteous (Psalm 1)
Date Posted: October 11, 2006

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night (Psalm 1:1-2 NKJV).

Psalm 1 contrasts the way of the righteous and the end result of living an ungodly life. Your journal is a great place to explore where you are on this journey. Use your journal to explore the following:

  • Are you currently receiving ungodly counsel or associating in an intimate way with unbelievers? What has been the result of that? If needed, how can you change this?
  • How can you be more focused in your time with believers?
  • Write about times you’ve delighted in God’s word. How has it changed your thinking? Are there things you can do to help you meditate on God’s Word not only occasionally, but day and night?

He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper (Psalm 1:3 NJKV).

  • What fruit of the Spirit (love, joy peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control) do you see most evident in your life? Write about how it is shown, and also write about which fruit you would most like to grow in.

The ungodly are not so, but are like the chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the ungodly shall perish (Psalm 1:4-6 NKJV).

  • When you read about the plight of the ungodly, how does your heart respond? Write about how this motivates you as a Christian in your walk with the Lord and also how it affects your thinking regarding your relationships with unbelievers.
  • The Lord knows the way of the righteous. Does this thought comfort you? Explain.
