Afraid

Let me start with an apology for not being consistent with my writing. Seems like I'm a living example of that insurance commercial where it says "Life Comes At You Fast." Honestly, if I were to share with you all that has transpired in the last 3 weeks of my life, I doubt you'd believe me. It's complicated on so many levels. So when you add to my last post about "anxiety" all the things that have happened, I'm in a place of being very "afraid."

I know God's word tells me not to fear.

"Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid." Matthew 14:27

"Do not be afraid, for I am with you." Genesis 26:24

"I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people who have set themselves against me all around. Save me, O my God." Psalm 3:6-7

"When I am afraid, I will trust in You." Psalm 56:3

But if we are completely honest with each other and ourselves, we'd have to admit there are times in our lives when we are very much afraid. If you say you're not or never have been, well, you're lying or you're living in denial.

So, if God has told us to not be afraid, why do we often feel afraid? In Psalm 18, David tells us that being afraid is the result of the evil that engulfs us on every side and this is beause of our own unbelief and sinful ways. David tells us to trust in God when we are afraid.

It's not uncommon for many people to feel afraid today. In many conversations I have each and every day, I often hear others say they are afraid. They are afraid of what their child is doing, they are afraid of losing their job, they are afraid of what's happening with the economy. They are afraid they cannot keep their marriage together. They are just afraid.

I'm guilty. I've been afraid of thousands of things... and it seems like the list just keeps growing.

But I'm trying to do battle with it. So when I read these passages of scripture above, I'm reminded that I should not be afraid. I am reminded that my hope is in the Lord and that He has promised that He will take care of us. All we have to do is cast our cares, worries and fears upon Him and rest in the assurance that He will take care of us.

It's hard. Especially when life feels out of control. But I'm trying. I'm learning that now is the time for me to let go of being afraid and let God take care of all of my concerns.

Do you struggle with being afraid? Or do you have the complete assurance of God's protection over you? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.
