Are You Thirsty?

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Matthew 5:6 NIV

Water is essential to life.

Did you know roughly three-fourths of the earth's surface is covered by water? That's a lot of water. But guess what? Only 1% of the world's water is usable to us. That's because about 97% it is salt water and then 2% of it is frozen in glaciers and polar ice caps. So, that leaves us with only 1% of the water on the earth to supply the entire world with this precious commodity necessary for our survival.

Water is absolutely a fundamental part of our lives. It is easy to forget how dependant we are on it. Our very survival depends on water. Did you experts have ranked water as second only to oxygen as essential for life?

Here are some interesting facts: the average adult is 55-75% water; 2/3 of your body weight is water; a human embryo is more than 80% water; a newborn baby is 74% water. Everyday your body must replace 2 1/2 quarts of water. Since such a large percentage of our bodies is water, water figures heavily in how our bodies function. We need lots of clean water to stay healthy. Aside from aiding in digestion and absorption of food, water regulates body temperature and blood circulation, carries nutrients and oxygen to cells, and removes toxins and other wastes. This "body water" also cushions joints and protects tissues and organs, including the spinal cord, from shock and damage.

Did you know dehydration can kill us faster than starvation? And since the plants and animals we eat also depend on water, lack of water could also cause both dehydration and starvation. The scenario becomes bleaker when you realize that water that looks drinkable can contain harmful elements, which could cause illness and death if ingested. This is a huge problem in third world countries where many poor households are forced to rely on contaminated water. According to the World Health Organization, 1.1 billion people lack access to clean water. No wonder so many people are dying.

So, are you starting to get the message? Without water, we would die.

I believe this is why Jesus used the illustration of giving living water to those who drink from Him. Without drinking the living water Jesus offers, you will die, eternally separated from God.

When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, "Will you give me a drink?" (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water." "Sir," the woman said, "you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?" Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."
John 4:7-14 NIV

So, has all this talk of water made you a little thirsty? I know I'm more aware of my thirst as I type this and have a big bottle of water on my desk to drink when I'm done.

The funny thing is though, even after drinking this bottle, I'll be thirsty again later and I'll need more water. The thirst will never end… I'll always need more.

Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.
John 6:35 NIV

But that's not the case with Jesus. Drink from Him and you will never be thirsty. His well will never run dry and He will always give you all you need.

Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, 'From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.'"
John 7:37-38 NIV

So… come to Jesus. Drink. Quench your thirst.
