A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
John 13:34 NIV

Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart.
1 Peter 1:22 NIV

This is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another.
1 John 3:11 NIV

For the past week I've been home recovering from surgery. I've been unable to use my right arm and have had to rely on my husband, my family, and my friends to help me with some very basic tasks. It's been a humbling experience for me.

I am fiercely independent and didn't realize just how "proud" I can be.

When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.
Proverbs 11:2 NIV

God is definitely using this experience to teach me a valuable lesson - "love one another."

Well one could ask, "how do you love someone?" You could tell them - that's easy enough. But let me tell you - showing them is much more powerful.

I have seen an outpouring of love this week. My husband and family have bent over backwards to help me the past few days. I don't want to minimize what they've done - but even before I had surgery I believed they loved me.

I guess what has really surprised me is the kindness of those I haven't known as long or as well.

I changed churches last year when I got married. Since joining this new church I've met some wonderful people. As soon as they heard about my surgery they jumped in to offer a hand. I've received home cooked meals, visits, cards, and phone calls. The love they have displayed towards me and my husband goes beyond thoughtfulness - we have truly seen "love" come to life.

I've also seen "love" from old friends and my previous "church" family.

The Bible talks often about living together in community and how we can love one another.

I've had the awesome privilege of seeing and experiencing this first hand.

I truly am blessed and praise God who is the source of every good thing.

Now I see it as my responsibility to live this out and do the same for others as they have done for me.
