Do-Over
Date Posted: October 10, 2007
Praise the LORD, O my soul;
all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
Praise the LORD, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits-
who forgives all your sins
and heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion,
who satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.

Psalm 103:1-5 NIV

Have you ever said something you wish you could take back?

Have you ever done something you wish you didn't do?

Have you just completely blown it and wish you could get a do-over?

I have.

I've said things I wish I hadn't said. I've done things I wish I hadn't done. And some days I'd give anything if I could have a do-over.

Praise the LORD who forgives all my sins. He redeems me from the pit I've dug for myself and crowns me with love and compassion.

Mercy.

He offers mercy - even though I don't deserve it.

I am humbled by it.

A common adage says that grace gives what we do not deserve - eternal life; while mercy withholds what we do deserve - eternal punishment. But mercy goes much deeper, in that it is the lovingkindness of God.

Not only are we on the receiving end of mercy - but we are also called to extend it to others.

The same mercy God offers us - He offers to others and He's called us to be examples of His love - regardless of our situation or circumstances.

Do not withhold good from those who deserve it,
when it is in your power to act.
Do not say to your neighbor,
"Come back later; I'll give it tomorrow"—
when you now have it with you.
Proverbs 3:27-28 NIV

To truly love others and to demonstrate true mercy, we should be willing to put ourselves out, to the extent we are able, that we may demonstrate the same lovingkindness to our neighbor that God has to us.

God's lovingkindness was demonstrated to us through Him giving us His only son - Jesus Christ - who willingly died for us.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
John 3:16-17 NIV

It is Christlike to extend mercy to the undeserving. I know I'm undeserving.

He's so amazing.

He gives us a do-over just because we love Him.

Shouldn't we do the same for others?
