We can celebrate this Easter because the tomb is empty. A couple of weeks ago our worship leader mentioned this during our service. My niece, being a young and fairly new Christian looked over to me and said, "I don't get it." It was obvious by her facial expression that she didn't really understand what that meant. As I tried to explain it to her I could see she was becoming more and more confused. I said a quick prayer and asked God to give me the right words to speak to help her understand. I was making it too complicated and I needed help simplifying the message. One word that was all He gave me "evidence"! The empty tomb was "evidence" that Jesus had conquered death, overcome the grave, defeated Satan and sin for each of us.
In the midst of trying to explain something that seemed so complicated I realized it was very simple. I think that's why Jesus tells us to come with child-like faith. Once I shared that word with my niece she immediately understood. All my words had just confused her more and with one word she understood.
This year I will be celebrating Easter in Uganda. When I realized I wouldn't be home over Easter, at first I was a little sad. Easter is the most joyous of holidays for me and I so longed to share it with the people I love the most. However, I quickly realized how selfish that was of me. I can see my family and friends all the time. How often will I get the chance to celebrate Easter with a new family of believers? This is really a once in a lifetime chance. Once I changed my perspective, I got so excited and now I can hardly wait to leave. I have no idea what Easter will be like in Uganda, but I have no doubt that Jesus will be there, just as He is here in our presence and no longer in the tomb.
We can celebrate His Resurrection because the tomb is empty!
