Mary's Heart
Date Posted: December 6, 2006

"I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May it be to me as you have said."

Luke 1:38 NIV

"Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!"

Luke 1:45 NIV

While it's nice to decorate for Christmas, have family gatherings, and exchange gifts, the true reason for this holiday is the birth of our precious Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It's important this truth not get lost in the shuffle of all the busy activities we have planned over the next several weeks.

My husband and I went to see "The Nativity Story" this past weekend. I was deeply moved by the young lady who played Mary in this movie. While I've read the story of Christ and His birth many times over in the Bible, seeing the story come to life on the screen gave me a new perspective. While the most exciting part of the story for me is the birth of Jesus, I can't help but notice Mary's heart as she is faced with such a huge responsibility.

I can only imagine the things that went through Mary's mind when she was first visited by the angel. She was only a young girl who had only heard stories of the Messiah. Who would ever believe that she had been chosen by God to bring the Savior into the world?

Mary had a heart that was willing to believe despite what seemed impossible.

Mary was willing to trust in something and someone she could not see.

Mary had faith that God would do what He had promised.

Mary did not let fear of persecution prevent her from obeying.

Mary was willing to give life to hope for a nation that had suffered greatly.

Mary was humble, honest, yet strong.

She is a wonderful example of a beautiful Christian woman.

As we face this holiday season, may we all seek to emulate the qualities Mary has so beautifully displayed in her heart.

Dear Precious Father, please help us to have a heart like Mary's. We want to believe even when we cannot see. We want to trust You in all things. Give us faith to move mountains. Show us how to be obedient without fear. We place our hope in You. We love You and give You all the praise, glory and honor. In the name of our mighty Savior Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
