Powerful Prayers
Date Posted: March 15, 2006

Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!”
Mark 9:23-24 NKJV

Are you one of those people who hated to pray out loud? Do you worry that those listening might not be impressed with how you pray or the things you might say?

Praying isn’t a matter of eloquence. God doesn’t need another “Shakespearian” prayer. What He wants is your heart. And if He doesn’t have your heart, then your words don’t mean a thing.

Take the father in Mark 9, verses 14 through 27… his prayer was anything but eloquent. In fact, it was a very timid prayer… but his heart spoke loud and clear. He was honest in his belief and yet still struggling to believe.

Jesus didn’t care that his prayer wasn’t eloquent. Jesus just wanted his honesty and his heart and in return He offered him grace and answered his prayer.

And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
2 Corinthians 12:9 NKJV

In the book of Matthew, we see a different version of this same story in Mark 9.

So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.
Matthew 17:20 NKJV

Powerful prayers aren’t about the words… they are about your heart… your faith in the one who answers them.

I’d like to challenge you to get into the habit of praying out loud… whether it’s in your small group or even if you’re sitting in your car at a traffic light with a lot on your mind. Just talk to Jesus as you would if He were your friend sitting right next to you. Give Him your honest feelings… give Him your heart.

He’s the same God who answered the timid prayer of a man whose son was demon-possessed. He’s the same God who parted the Red Sea. He’s the same God who made the lame walk and the blind man see.

The power of such an awesome God is only a prayer away.
