Strength and Shield
Date Posted: June 16, 2004

The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and I am helped. Therefore my heart rejoices, and I praise Him with my song.
Psalms 28:7 HCSB

I recently started working with a personal trainer. I'm really excited about the improvements I've seen in my strength. At first, some of the weights were so heavy (even the ones I thought were light), I almost couldn't lift them. But the more I worked out the stronger I have become and now those weights which at first seemed heavy now seem so much lighter. It's not something that has happened overnight. Instead, it has required practice, patience and persistence. Over time I have gotten stronger and stronger.

I believe the same is true of my trust in Christ. For me, learning to trust Him has been a process. It has taken time. I have had to practice, be patient and persist in my dependence on Him. As I have grown in my daily walk with the Lord, He has given me bigger things to deal with… all to develop my "trust" muscles. Just as my physical muscles have gotten stronger with deliberate work and effort and the result is feeling better, healthier and stronger – the same goes for my "trust" muscles. The more I depend on the Lord as my strength and shield; I experience the benefits of that dependence – His help.

In Scriptures, David shows us how we can depend on the Lord and place our trust in Him and He will be our strength and our shield.

As our strength, we can depend on the Lord to be our support, to carry us through all our trials and tribulations. He has given us not only strength in our body, but strength in our mind, our life and in our salvation.

As our shield, we can depend on Him to protect us against evil and the enemy. He is always watching over us – looking out for us. He is faithful and He always will be.

Our hearts can trust in Him– not in our own strength or righteousness (there are lots and lots of times when I struggle with this). We should not place our trust in other things or other people. He is the source of strength and righteousness. Without Him we are helpless.

The fruit of this trust is that He helps us out of our troubles; in whatever He calls us to. Not only will God help us, but it is in our trusting of Him our spirits are lifted. We can then rejoice – truly rejoice – from the depths of our heart because of our gratitude to Him for protecting us.

When our heart truly rejoices, we can praise Him with our song. It will just come naturally. Expressing our gratitude to the Lord in this way is the least we can do. And hopefully, in doing so, others are invited and encouraged to trust in Him too.

Do you trust Him today to be your strength and shield?
