You Invite Us In
Date Posted: November 17, 2010

On Wednesday I had the honor and privilege of singing in the chapel where I work. The men in attendance have embarked upon a seven-month journey as they are participating in a life-recovery program. I’m so proud of them and the commitment they have to getting their lives on track.

I have been so busy this last I’ve lost track of time and am running on adrenaline. On this particular morning, I was very much in a hurry and had to leave early. I put in my practice CD with the songs I was going to be singing that morning and was on my way. As I was driving through my neighborhood, I noticed a white dog limping across the street. As much as I didn’t want to be late, I also couldn’t bare the thought of not stopping to check on this little dog. As it turns out, she didn’t have a collar or tag. As I stood in the middle of the street with my car running and my son in his car seat, I contemplated what to do. Much to my shame, I will admit for a second I thought about just going on… thinking surely someone else can help, someone who has more time than I do. But then I looked into these sweet little eyes and knew in my heart, someone must be missing this little dog. So I scooped her up and put her in my car. I had no idea what I was going to do with her, but I knew I couldn’t leave her there.

Then the song came on in the car… “You Invite Me In” by Meredith Andrews.

Here are some of the lyrics:

I've been searching,

Wandering and hurting

Ashamed of the shape I'm in

Afraid you'll see who I really am

You invite me in

Doesn't matter where I've been

Your arms are open wide

There's nothing left to hid

You invite me in

Doesn't matter who I've been

Your arms are open wide

Pulling me to Your side

I’d been practicing this song all week and suddenly the lyrics hit me like a ton of bricks. I started crying as I thought about how our Father in Heaven sees us. He doesn’t care where we’ve been or who we’ve been. He loves us and His arms are open wide.

I looked down at this little dog and felt like God was speaking directly to me in that moment. I realized God never hesitates with us, like I did with this dog. I knew God was telling me just how much He loves me and how much He loves each and every one of His children.

I know you’ve probably heard or read this verse hundreds of time… but stop and really read it, hear it and meditate upon it. Allow the depth of these words to touch your heart and soul and realize just how much God loves you.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
