Sufficient Grace

Joshua 1

There are some scripture passages that bring overwhelming comfort, leaving me to wonder why I make life so hard. Joshua 1:7-9 is a perfect example: Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." Doesn’t this passage just fill you with comfort, confidence and courage? Matthew Henry’s Commentary states; "Let not the sense of thine own infirmities dishearten thee; God is all-sufficient. I have commanded, called, and commissioned thee to do it, and will be sure to bear thee out in it. When we are in the way of duty, we have reason to be strong and very bold. Our Lord Jesus, as Joshua here, was borne up under his sufferings by a regard to the will of God, and the commandment from his Father." All-Sufficient – God is All-sufficient, and all He asks is for us to obey Him. He will lead, protect, provide, deliver, advocate, comfort, and love us… He does all of the hard work, we must simply obey. Not easy, but simple. Just do it.
