Being single in my mid-30’s has inspired me to regularly ask God to make me a priority in someone’s life. For years, I have felt like I was in ‘extended families’ but no one’s priority. This is why I blog, to have a sounding board where others have spouses, parents, etc..
I remember a few years ago, sitting at Northland while they were singing, “I Can Only Imagine” by MercyMe and, once again, asking Him, “God, you’ve given me friends, yet they all have families that, logically, come before me. I want to be someone’s priority.” He spoke these words to my heart: “Shelly, you are MY priority. I gave my Son for you.”
I stopped saying that prayer.
This morning, I was reflecting on how He recently showed me just as I had put Seminole before Him, I had been putting my church before Him. I came very close to leaving the church I love so much, believing it was time to move on. A discussion with one of the pastors last week helped me see the big picture. Now, I consistently ask God to help me focus more on Him than myself… I already see the difference in big ways. Things that would upset me, I turn over to Him and remember it is all about him. Now I get the verse, “Seek first his kingdom and righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” All I must do is keep Him my priority.
Part of me is afraid I will forget this and soon revert to my selfish, emotional ways, but I am giving that doubt to Him as well… and focusing on Him before myself.
