The Bible Speaks

Defilement of the Body (Jude 8b)

Likewise also these dreamers defile the flesh, reject authority, and speak evil of dignitaries (Jude 8).

In Jude 8, the phrase, “defile the flesh” means to corrupt or pollute the flesh. The idea is that false teachers contaminate their own physical bodies. The inescapable meaning here is sexual immorality. False teachers often teach that they are exempt from God’s restrictions and prohibitions concerning sexual immorality.

But the Bible states in 1 Corinthians 6:19,20, “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore, glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” We are to glorify God not just in our spirit, but in our bodies as well. This includes remaining free of sexual practices outside of marriage.

Sadly, false teachers are not content to defile only their own flesh, but through their teaching, example, and practice, false teachers also pollute others. False teachers appeal to fallen humanity’s love of darkness and natural propensity to sin.

John 3:19-21 reads, “And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.20 “For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.21 “But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”

Teaching the Bible, the Word of God exposes the dark deeds of sin, declares the holiness of God, and calls for repentance to all to come to Christ.

A person who is determined or committed to living an immoral life, or even a self-centered life, will flee from the truth of the gospel of Christ.
