The Focus
by Dennis Wheeler
Most likely all of us have watched with interest on television the recovery efforts for the thousands of folks who have been terribly devastated by Hurricane Charley. Homes have been destroyed...water is unsafe to drink...gasoline for cars is not available...electricity is unavailable to thousands...phone lines are down...and sadly, lives have been lost.
We read the newspaper and watch the evening news and with despair we shake our heads and say, "How sad! How awful it must be for those folks." And we tend to act like we are helpless and hopeless.
BUT...WE'RE NOT!!
We have the power of PRAYER! In fact, prayer is one of the benefits of being in trouble. James reminds in the New Testament that we are to be thankful for our trials, and a revved-up prayer life may just be one of the reasons. James also tells us "Is any one of you trouble? He should pray." (James 5:13)
I'm sure you agree that troubles definitely tend to make our prayer life more abundant, and more time spent with God leads to a greater understanding of His character. Knowing God's character gives us the faith that He is with us in all our troubles, and that gives us peace.
Not only that, but having a need keeps us dependent upon God for meeting all our needs.
So...let's join together in approaching the throne of God on behalf of those in Florida who are struggling and hurting. May they find help...may they find peace...may they find comfort...may they find love... may they find God!
"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." - Psalms 46:1
