"Were you there?"
Date Posted: March 17, 2004

Sometime within the next four weeks you are certain to hear the old spiritual being sung..."Were you there when they crucified my Lord?"

Obviously, we can't answer a literal 'yes'. We are fully aware that Jesus Christ was crucified over 2000 years ago. Those who were there, standing at the foot of that blood-stained cross, included disciples, soldiers, religious leaders, a few friends, and some passersby.

They saw more than they could fully understand. The sinless Son of God was subjected to cruel punishment and a heinous execution. But the true injustice was the fact that Jesus took on Himself the shame and guilt of all sin for all time!

Before He died, those who were there when the Lord was crucified heard Him say, "It is finished." (John 19:30). I have read that those words could also be translated "Paid in full!" In other words, Jesus allowed our moral debt of holiness to be paid in full by Him. By His sinless life and sacrificial death, Jesus was willing to foot the bill.

Then to prove He had the moral reserves to actually cover what He offered to pay for, He defeated death!

I really like the praise song we sang in worship a couple of weeks ago...

"I belive in Jesus.
I believe He is the Son of God.
I believe He died and rose again.
I believe He paid for us all.
And I believe He's here now,
Standing in our midst,
Here with the power to heal now
And the grace to forgive."

Because of the resurrrection, Jesus is standing in our midst!
