The Way
by Kevin Pauley
My bones were not hidden from You when I was made in secret, when I was formed in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw me when I was formless; all my days were written in Your book and planned before a single one of them began. God, how difficult Your thoughts are for me to comprehend; how vast their sum is! If I counted them, they would outnumber the grains of sand; when I wake up, I am still with You. - Psalm 139:15-18 HCSB
Ages ago, magma made its way out from the center of the earth to the relatively cooler upper mantle. There it solidified into some bedrock that from the human perspective was immoveable. However, that bedrock was in fact part of a continental plate, which was floating on a sea of molten rock while civilizations rose and fell on its back. Soon, the continental plate began pushing against another one and the edge began pushing up through the thin layer of dirt that covers our planet. That extruded rock became a mountain range on the North American continent where thousands of years later a little nation known as the United States of America would be birthed.
Century after century, the rock was exposed to sunlight and rain; heat and cold. Bits of rock began to flake off and tumble to the bottom of the slope. Leaves and twigs blew off the nearby trees every fall and piled up over the rock. Over the course of time, the rock flakes and the organic matter continued to break down and mix together until rich earth was formed.
Settlers arrived from the east coast of the continent on covered wagons. A farmer decided to homestead in the beautiful valley and planted a large garden in the earth that had once been bedrock. A century later, the farm was much larger and provided food for the grocery stores in a small town that had sprung up nearby.
After five more decades passed, a young woman went to that grocery store and purchased produce that had come from that farm for her mother. She took it home and helped her mom cook it, beginning the process of breaking down the chemical bonds in the vegetables. She and her family enjoyed a delicious meal, completely unaware that her body was using the nutrients from the mix of ancient bedrock and organic material to make an egg. Later that year, the young woman married and her egg was penetrated by one particularly energetic sperm from her husband. A child was conceived and they named the little boy Kevin.
Ages ago, as the magma made its way out from the center of the earth; Hashem knew which piece would end up as me. How difficult that is to conceive! How vast are His thoughts. What can I do with such a God but submit to His superior knowledge?
