Thoughts of a saint and slave
by Sam Isaacson
From time to time we sing a song at my local church by Paul Oakley. The words in the chorus are 'It's all about you, Jesus; and all this is for you, for your glory and your fame...You alone are God'. I was told off by a (well-meaning, Christian) friend recently for liking this song because saying that Jesus alone is God is theologically inaccurate seeing as the Father and the Spirit are also God.
Fair enough, true enough, but in my opinion not important enough to mean I should stop declaring Jesus is the one true God through that song.
My purpose today isn't to somehow undermine the orthodox doctrine of the Trinity (which I fully submit to, by the way). Rather, it's to underline the fact that acknowledging Jesus as fully God is the unique selling point of Christianity! World religions acknowledge Jesus' existence as a man and even a prophet, and don't even have the first idea about how to talk about the Holy Spirit, so Jesus' deity is what I believe Christians should focus on more than anything else in evangelistic conversations.
Furthermore, considering that the title of this website is 'Live as if...', how would Christians affect the world differently if we all lived as if Jesus was actually God?
Well, the Bible seems to be unashamed about talking about Jesus, and one New Testament letter that leads the way on this is the letter to the Hebrews:
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son (Hebrews 1:1-2)
Throughout history many have rightly worshipped God after having heard from him in many different ways, some of which are good and should be learnt from, others of which can be conveniently overlooked, but nowadays we have no other option than to learn of God through his one and only Son, Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.
Muslims claim to worship the same God that Jesus did; they are wrong. Jews claim to worship the same God that Jesus did; they are wrong. Jesus is God. Will we live as if that's true?
