Thoughts of a saint and slave

Wisen up: Proverbs 3:21-26
Date Posted: July 23, 2011

'My son, do not lose sight of these—keep sound wisdom and discretion, and they will be life for your soul and adornment for your neck.
Then you will walk on your way securely, and your foot will not stumble. If you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
Do not be afraid of sudden terror or of the ruin of the wicked, when it comes, for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught.' (Proverbs 3:21-26)

This week's article will be short, because I'd like you to take the time you'd normally spend reading my article to think on these words. Have a read of what Solomon promises to all who keep sound wisdom and discretion: a secure life's walk, sweet sleep, no fear of the unexpected...that sounds attractive to me! But it's a promise from God if we rely on His wisdom. Let's think about this logically, and let's examine our hearts. Do we believe that God is in complete control? Well, yes I do. Do we believe that God is abundantly loving? Yes, I believe that too. If both of those statements are true, it stands to reason that not a single thing can happen that is bad for us.

Spurgeon called Romans 8:28 'the fortress': 'And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.' Although we may not understand our circumstances, God is permanently good, and in control. I'm going to leave us with a quote from the excellent A. W. Tozer:

'Wisdom, among other things, is the ability to devise perfect ends and to achieve those ends by the most perfect means....All God's acts are done in perfect wisdom, first for His own glory, and then for the highest good of the greatest number for the longest time. And all His acts are as pure as they are wise, and as good as they are wise and pure. Not only could His acts not be better done: a better way to do them could not be imagined.'
