Thoughts of a saint and slave
by Sam Isaacson
My son, be attentive to my wisdom; incline your ear to my understanding, that you may keep discretion, and your lips may guard knowledge. (Proverbs 5:1-2)
A short article this week, just to get our minds working to the glory of God. After having spent the past four chapters telling us that wisdom is the key to life, and sharing all sorts of useful lessons Solomon finds himself telling his reader to listen carefully to wisdom so that we would not tell people about it. Confused?
Know when to shut up
I'm massive fan of being 'out there', preaching the gospel in every way we can. I think our Facebook and Twitter statuses should glorify God rather than tell people what we had for breakfast or what we thought of the most recent episode of Downton Abbey. I think the way we work and interact with friends should make people ask us why we're different from everyone else.
But we do face a problem, don't we? If you tell someone you're a Christian, what's their initial response? Is it something along the lines of...'What do you think of homosexuality?' or, 'What do you think about women?' or, 'What do you think of sex outside marriage?' or, 'Are you saying you think I'm going to hell?' In other words, people's ideas of Christianity in my experience revolve around one word: judgmentalism.
So listen to Solomon: don't stop learning wisdom, be attentive. But have discretion and guard knowledge; it's simply true that some unbelievers are not in a position to receive the truth that they're sinners in God's eyes, they might need another route into the gospel.
