A Working Outline of the Book of Romans
Date Posted: October 13, 2019

Since beginning this series on the book of Romans, I have had requests for an outline of the book. It is presented here for your study and usage. It is brief, but I think it is reasonably accurate. Like all outlines of the Bible, as one's knowledge of a book's contents change, so should the outline. Call it a working outline if you will and may God bless it to your use.

  1. Paul's greeting and opening remarks (1:1-1:15)

  2. The Thesis Statement of the book of Romans (1:16-1:18)

  3. Manifest evils of man apart from God (1:19-4)

    1. Manifest evils of the Gentiles (1:19-1:32)

    2. Manifest evils of the Jews (2-3)

      1. On judging others while being guilty of the same sins (2)

      2. On understanding that there is none righteous under the Law; No, not one! (3)

  4. Justification is in Christ, not the Law (4-8)

    1. Abraham was justified but not through the Law (4)

    2. Justification occurs while were are yet sinners (5)

    3. Justification and the New Man is in Christ (6)

    4. Condemnation and the Old Man is in the Law (7)

  5. The Divine Plan culminates in actualized salvation (8)

  6. The arrogance and ignorance of Israel (9-11)

    1. God the Potter and man the clay (9)

    2. Salvation is only of God through hearing and obeying the Gospel (10)

    3. Israel's salvation is the same as everyone else's salvation (11)

  7. The Gospel at Work (12-15)

    1. The Gospel applied to the Body of Christ (12)

    2. The Gospel applied to our everyday lives (13)

    3. The Gospel in matters of faith and opinion (14)

    4. The Gospel; everyone ministers to everyone else (15)

  8. The Gospel at work in the church of Christ (16)

    Questions:

    1. Why is an outline helpful in interpreting a book?

    2. What is a thesis statement?

    3. What is the thesis statement of the book of Romans?

    4. Does Paul prove his thesis in the book? If his thesis is true, how will all saved persons come to know salvation? What about the Jews? What about the Gentiles?
