Some One Chapter Blessings – Jude
Focus Text: Jude 1.25
This miniseries began as follows: "To God our Savior, Who alone is wise, Be glory and majesty, Dominion and power, Both now and forever. Amen." (Jude 1.25). Jesus, our Savior, is God. In order for any being to be appropriately called God, he must possess all the attributes of Deity – no exceptions. While engaged in His earthly ministry, Jesus possessed all the attributes of Deity. He possessed these same attributes prior to His earthly ministry and He possessed all of these same attributes after His ministry. Jesus, our Savior, was, is, and always shall be fully God. We conclude and ask that you be convinced by Jesus’ own arguments as to His being Deity.
From the book of John:
So the Jews said, "Will He kill Himself, because He says, ‘Where I go you cannot come’?" And He said to them, "You are from beneath; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins." Then they said to Him, "Who are You?" And Jesus said to them, "Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning. I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but He who sent Me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I heard from Him." They did not understand that He spoke to them of the Father. Then Jesus said to them, "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things." (John 8.22-27).
Jesus answered, "If I honor Myself, My honor is nothing. It is My Father who honors Me, of whom you say that He is your God. Yet you have not known Him, but I know Him. And if I say, ‘I do not know Him,’ I shall be a liar like you; but I do know Him and keep His word. Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad." Then the Jews said to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?" Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM." Then they took up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by. (John 8.54-59).
The above verses are from an extensive discourse Jesus had with the Jews in Jerusalem. Within these quotes, there are three explicit claims by Jesus that He was/is Deity. Jesus made each of these claims by applying the idea of perpetual and eternal existence to Himself, employing the same "I AM" formula that the Father used with Moses at the burning bush (see Exodus 3.14). In the texts just cited, those statements appear in verses 24,28, and 58 (the translator supplier "He" obscures the meaning in verses 24,28). But, for Jesus to be the I AM as He claimed here, He of necessity was on a par with and equal to the Father in every way!
Jesus, Our Savior, Is God. Honor Him by acknowledging Him for who He was and is!
Questions:
1. From what class of beings does Jesus exclude Himself by making the I AM claims?
2. If Jesus existed before Abraham, what bearing does that have on His response to the Jews’ question, "Whom do you make yourself out to be?"
3. Note the response the Jews had to Jesus’ claims (they intended to stone Him). Why would they be so angry over His claims? Is this consistent with what would be expected had they understood that He was claiming to be Deity?
4. Can one honor Jesus and deny that He is Deity? Why or why not?
