THE WATER OF LIFE
Before resuming our thoughts on the Prince of Life (Acts 3:15), we will examine one more “of life” expressions from the scriptures. This final phrase, the “Water of Life,” is used 3 times in the scriptures and all three references are from the book of Revelation.
First, consider the reality of the Water of Life. John affirmed that an angel “showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb.” (Revelation 22:1). Jesus told the Samaritan woman during His earthly ministry that water existed that was capable of slaking man’s eternal thirst. Of it He said, “Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst.” (John 4:14)
Second, consider the source of the Water of Life. To the Samaritan woman He said it was water that only He could give. Its source was not governed by any human authority nor contained within any earthly state. It cannot be commandeered by rogues, bartered by entrepreneurs, or contaminated by terrorists. It’s source is secure in as much as it is a river “clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb.”
Third, it is in abundant supply. It’s waters are available to all who desire them. “‘I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.’ And the Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!’ And let him who hears say, ‘Come!’ And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.” There are no restrictions on who may partake other than “Whoever desires.” There is no charge in as much as all may “take of the water of life freely!” There is no danger that drought nor famine can bring it into short supply because it is kept by the Creator of all that is or ever shall be!
Finally, think of the result! Those who drink need never thirst again. It is a wellspring that heals the soul and that quenches the thirst that all men know as they traverse life’s desert of sin. It is the only pool in which man catches a glimpse of his own image (James 1:23-25) and in which He may see the true reflection of the Father (John 14:9). It is the source of life, but moreover, it is the source of the Abundant Life that Jesus promises (John 10:10).
To enjoy the Water of Life, every man must lay aside his spirit of self-sufficiency and adorn himself with the lovely garb of humility. When one seeks to approach the Water of Life on any terms other than those declared by the Prince of Life, He ensures that he will never drink. On the other hand, when man comes to the water of life on his knees and without any pretentious spirit, the Lord gladly and joyfully grants his heart’s request.
The Prince of Life governs and protects the Water of Life. He dispenses freely to all who would drink. To die of thirst, one has to do nothing. The Prince of Life lives and so do all those who petition Him for Water!
