Word from Nairnshire

One man was quite upset, and wondered what was coming next, when he heard it said that all the members of our family will be in heaven, once it is all over down here.

It is certainly true, but not as some might wish to interpret it.

Not long into the ministry of Jesus Christ, some members of his family appeared with the intent of stopping him. They thought he was mad and daft.

When Mary and her other sons were outside the house where Jesus was teaching, someone explained to Jesus that his mother and brothers wanted to see him.

Jesus’ reply is one of the most revolutionary and radical sentences in the Bible.

Jesus explained in very simple terms, that his mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice. His explanations are invariably uncomplicated.

When we become believers in Jesus and are born again, we enter into a new relationship with one another. We become members of the family of God, and we become committed to the family, with all its needs, challenges, problems, opportunities and blessings.

We align ourselves with all its strengths and weaknesses, with all its friendliness and awkward characters.

Old family relationships are not excluded, and cast aside, but new relationships are bonding and binding.

We may not like all the members in the family, but they are still family.

Jesus taught, “Love one another as I have loved you”.

Interestingly, Jesus said that after Judas left the room.

Jesus never rejected Mary. She became a disciple.

He honoured her right to the end, and baptised her in the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost.

Mary’s last recorded words are worthy of our attention and obedience.

“Do whatever he tells you.”
