Word from Nairnshire
by Sandy Shaw
Ancient advice applies as much today as it did then.
There is a man, one man, trying to settle all the arguments among his people. He is an important man doing a vital work.
We would call it shepherding, counselling, coaching or mentoring. This is nothing new.
He was taking on far too much and he was not aware of it, but his father-in-law saw what was happening, and pointed it out.
Moses was prepared to listen and learn from others.
He is encouraged to teach the people the Word of God and the principles which God reveals.
Show people the way to live, and the duties which God expects of them, but select capable men to deal with various disputes.
Appoint men who fear God. Choose men who are trustworthy, and who hate dishonest gain. They can deal with the simple straightforward disagreements. You can keep yourself for the more difficult situations.
A similar situation arose early on in the Church of Jesus Christ, and the apostles appointed seven men to deal with a specific issue. These leaders knew they had to give their priority, and attention, to prayer and the preaching and teaching of the Word of God.
The seven appointed on this occasion had to be men of faith, who were also filled with the Holy Spirit and wise.
Can you imagine someone grumbling? “I used to be able to get Moses to deal with my problem, and now, I can only see one of these new elders!”
“These able brothers James and John used to serve me. We just get one of the new boys now!”
Note carefully the required qualities of those being appointed.
These leaders were godly men, who knew how to serve and function under the available anointing.
