Word from Nairnshire

In order to be a prophetic preacher who was able to speak clearly and tenderly, Isaiah had to be strong, courageous and unafraid.

He had to speak to people who had been forced from their homes by the Babylonian conquerors, and while in Babylon they had a horrendous time. Much of this suffering could have been so easily avoided, if only they had listened to the men God sent.

Such was their sadness, in modern day Iraq, that they could not sing, praise and worship.

But, Isaiah sees a big God, who is able to deal with all the troubles of His people.

God is big.

He measured the waters in the hollow of His hand.

Consider the millions of miles across the galaxies, and that is the distance between His thumb and little finger.

Is this just poetic picture language? Well, it is said in the same breath as Zion, Judah and Jerusalem, and some of us have walked there.

Dare for a moment to think of God’s mind. None of us can understand the Spirit of the Lord, even when we are baptised in the Holy Spirit and filled with the Holy Spirit.

Who has ever instructed God or been asked to give Him counsel?

Whom did God consult to enlighten Him? Who taught Him the right way or indicated how He should act?

The nations are likened to a drop in a bucket, or dust on old-fashioned scales.

If you have a pail full of water a drop will never be missed. If you have a sack of corn, the dust on the scales is irrelevant.

In contrast, His people are precious.

God guides, leads and shepherds, as if He had nothing else to do in the entire universe.
