Word from Nairnshire

Young David arrives on the scene with provisions for his brothers and he hears the voice of Goliath, the Philistine giant.

Some voices can send a shiver down your spine. Certain telephone calls can be most upsetting. Cutting critical comments can floor you for quite a time.

There has been no movement between these two armies for weeks. It is stalemate, and David discusses the scenario with various soldiers.

David believed in the Covenant, and the promises of God. He discerned that this giant was threatening the armies of the living God, and he exhibits a strong faith.

Saul had lost faith in the promises of God. Saul no longer believed the Word of God, and that was the trouble.

Every opportunity has a degree of opposition from some quarter, even surprising us at times.

David saw the same scene as everyone else, but he saw it differently.

David knew how to handle criticism and cope with negative comments, even when they came from his family. “Run away home little boy” was the reaction of his brothers.

To begin with, David is simply dismissed as being irrelevant in that dire confrontation.

News of his presence reached the ears of King Saul, and Saul more or less tells David that he is far too young and virtually useless to do anything, but David is quite confident, and refers to his apprenticeship training and his experiences while shepherding, fighting off a lion and a bear.

The same God who delivered me then, can deliver from this bullying giant.

A one legged teacher offered his services to go as a missionary to China with Hudson Taylor. When asked why he was offering to embark on such an arduous life his reply was, “I do not see those with two legs going!”
