The young man, having comes to his senses, returns home. Father spots him and, moved with compassion, runs to his boy.

As his runaway son tries to blurt out a confession, father interrupts and welcomes him home.

There is no row, nor the demand for the promise of, “Now, don’t you do that again”.

The father is generously unselfish as he arranges for clothing, food and rejoicing.

Was this not what he went off to find? The good life is to be found under the father’s roof.

“But what is going on in there?” A party is taking place, and the reason is explained.

The younger son, who had been as good as dead, was home alive. He who had been lost was found.

“Your brother has finally returned home.”

“I was not informed of any party.”

He is very bitter, and become touchy, angry and furious.

“You won’t get me in there!”

Father comes out just as he came out to his younger son, pleading with him to come in.

Big brother reveals deep resentment. He had been labouring on the farm over all these past weeks and, in a sense, appeared loyal, faithful and dutiful.

His brother had been squandering all his money on sin and prostitutes.

How did he know? Had he made clandestine visits down to Antioch behind father’s back?

He had served but remained so dissatisfied. He had remained in father’s house, but it had all been so dull, boring, and such a drag.

He asked for nothing, got nothing, and enjoyed nothing, and suddenly he becomes jealous of his wee brother.

Father is so tender and understanding. “You have nothing to lose by coming in. We had to celebrate.”

After all, father had been waiting for this moment.
