Word from Nairnshire
by Sandy Shaw
He thought he could not do it. No wonder he recoiled from the challenge. God was calling Jeremiah to speak to a rebellious nation.
To begin with he was afraid. That is understandable.
Fear can paralyse and make us self-conscious, until we curl up and become artificially shy.
Jeremiah tried to wriggle out of his calling, but there was no escape route.
As God saw and knew Jeremiah’s potential, He poured more and more into this maturing prophet.
God reached out and touched his lips, putting His words into Jeremiah’s mouth.
Lips are a most sensitive part of the body. He felt and sensed the tender touch of God. That experience never left him.
We not only have a God to whom we can talk and speak, but we have a God who speaks to us and who wants to talk with us. He does this through Jesus Christ, through the written Scriptures, and occasionally through people, whom He chooses.
The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah.
When a man is convinced of that, he will say things that otherwise he would not dare to utter.
The nation was in a sad state, and Jeremiah was to uproot, tear down, to destroy and overthrow, before he could build and plant. That is not the type of message most ears are keen to hear.
Israel was declining, becoming involved in various wrong political relationships, and growing weaker, morally and spiritually.
Jeremiah’s task was to point this out. He became known as a gloom and doom man.
If anyone ever calls you a real Jeremiah, and if it is accurate and true, accept it is as a compliment. It can only mean that you are speaking what God wants you to speak.
