Word from Nairnshire

Alongside the Reformation, some 400 years ago, there was another influential movement called the Renaissance, but the Renaissance produced no martyrs.

It was very different, involving the quiet pursuit of scholars, belonging to the area of the intellect, and so was of no great threat to Satan.

The challenge of the Word of God results in quite different consequences. There is a power behind the Scriptures which guides and encourages and rescues, or can infuriate individuals, as man is brought to face his sin and do something about it.

When you read the life of Jesus, and the history of the early Church in the book of Acts, the reality of spiritual warfare is evident and obvious.

The reformers did not appear to consider their work as a duty, or even an occupation. They thought of their calling as providing a banquet, presenting the nourishing bread of life for hungry needy men.

John Knox was a firebrand and a revolutionary, but consider what he, and those around him, did for the cause of education in Scotland.

Do you think John Knox was the type of man with whom you could sit down with a coffee and have a quiet chat?

These men, who had various weaknesses and passions, like the rest of us, were convinced that Jesus Christ was their Saviour and Lord, and that He had called them to lead and preach and teach.

A nation which had been in darkness was quite suddenly transformed with the light of God.

The grace of God had been hidden or lost, and these anointed men taught that the mercy and compassion of God was still available, and that the blood of Jesus Christ washes away sin, allowing people to be clean, and have a fresh start.
