Word from Nairnshire

Cut flowers

The Chancellor was not long into his Budget address when there was raucous reaction from both sides of the House of Commons. It was embarrassing to observe men in positions of responsibility and leadership behaving in such an immature manner.

What if the Chancellor had begun with these words? Godliness with contentment is great gain. We brought nothing into the world and we can take nothing out of it.

Paul then pens these appropriate words to young Pastor Timothy. The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people eager for money have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

God gives us so many answers and solutions to restlessness and greed, but do we want them?

Wealth is like drinking seawater. There is never satisfaction down that road.

The secret of contentment is not to add to a man’s possessions, but to take away his covetous desires.

If we have food and clothing we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction.

If you lost all your money, how much would you be worth?

Money can do great good when spent responsibly. It can be used to feed the hungry and shelter the homeless.

Peter writes to disciples of Jesus regarding these qualities and characteristics. Add to your faith goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness and love.

These vigorous virtues could resolve most of our social ills almost overnight, if only man would pay attention.

The world would love to enjoy these Christian graces and fruit, but without the Christian roots, and that can never be.

Jesus does not produce cut flowers!
