Word from Nairnshire
by Sandy Shaw
What was it that kept so many people away from Jesus Christ?
When Jesus Christ loves men and women with the love of God, and heals people, and ministers to all kinds of various needs, forgiving sins, and removing many of the consequences of sin, why do so many keep their distance from him?
During the Feast of Tabernacles, some six months before Jesus was arrested and crucified, his brothers sought to persuade him to go up to Jerusalem, and get into the heart of things. His brothers were trying to tell Jesus what to do.
There are always people who think they could improve upon the ministry of Jesus.
His brothers left Galilee for Jerusalem, and after they had gone, Jesus decided to go, but not publicly. It was too dangerous. His time had not yet come.
Next year Jesus would die, but not this year.
Jesus knew there was a plot to kill him.
He had told certain men they were bad and evil, and generally speaking man does not like to be told that. Such talk does not make for popularity.
Jesus had become a threat to formal religious tradition and political expediency.
It was to such superficiality that many looked for their security. They would not listen to what Jesus actually said.
Some men in Jerusalem could not make up their minds about Jesus.
When Jesus referred to himself as God, he was accused of blasphemy, and was regarded as a deceiver, as a fraud, as a false prophet.
When he healed on the Sabbath and ‘violated’ the Sabbath, religious leaders accused him of sacrilege.
Those who looked at what Jesus did, said he was good.
Those who looked at what Jesus said, said he was bad.
The community was divided.
