Word from Nairnshire
by Sandy Shaw
It is much more than a convenient motto, but a phrase he used frequently, and pregnant with significant spiritual meaning.
On some 25 occasions Isaiah referred to Almighty God as the Holy One of Israel.
The national situation was similar to what we are presently witnessing, in as much as the people to whom Isaiah prophesied, preached and spoke, were not very interested in what God had to say to them through His chosen anointed man.
The population in Jerusalem became so familiar with Isaiah’s vocabulary that when they resisted his powerful preaching, they told him to stop confronting them with the Holy One of Israel.
At least they were aware of Isaiah’s purpose and aim.
What did these rebellious blind people want? They were quite clear, adamant, and outspoken about that.
Tell us what we would so like to hear. Speak to us of pleasant things. Can you not recount some nice illusions? Surely you can share with us your dreams. Entertain us for an hour – well not quite an hour, dear man!
They wanted something soft and soothing in order to be sent away home feeling comfortable, relaxed, and that all was well.
Isaiah gave these men and women what God wanted them to hear. For many it must have been like sitting on drawing pins.
There came that moment when they finally said, “Away you go. Get out of our lives.”
Isaiah never had much of a congregation, numerically speaking, but when Jesus Christ came along He said, “You stoned the prophets.” You killed the men I sent, and as soon as they were dead, you erected memorials, and regarded them as spiritual giants.
The Holy One of Israel continued, and continues, to speak, challenge and confront.
