Word from Nairnshire
by Sandy Shaw
When Jesus goes up to Jerusalem, during the early days of His ministry, to observe the Passover, He is confronted with a shambolic mess in the place of prayer.
He finds traders selling oxen, sheep and doves, all in the name of religion.
Moneychangers are defrauding people in the Temple.
To pay the Temple tax special Jewish shekels were required.
Worshipping, and offering sacrifices, according to the rules and regulations of the human authorities, involved having the right money and the right animal, and the only place you could acquire these was at the Temple Mount.
The whole thing was a racket. Corrupt and immoral practices were rampant, as many were on the make.
These men had designed a cosy, comfortable, and rewarding system.
Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, blazes with fury at all this, displaying a holy righteous indignation.
When Jesus sees the situation in the Temple, He takes time to make a whip of small cords and uses it on all the sinful practices going on in the House of God. When Christ is confronted with sin in His Father’s House, He deals with it thoroughly.
Jesus shows and demonstrates how angry He is. Sin is serious.
His Father has sent Him to deal with sin, and not just some sin, but all sin.
In certain circumstances Jesus Christ is intolerant, and He will not permit sinful activities, especially when they are disguised and paraded under a cloak of religion.
“Get these out of here!”
With reference to physical and corporal punishment, Jesus is quite clear. Try applying this in 2010.
Men must be careful not to follow the Jesus of their dreams, nor some non-existent imaginary idol.
It is essential to see Jesus as He really is.
