Word from Nairnshire
by Sandy Shaw
You would have been thirsty too, but would you have asked for a drink from a stranger with whom you had no associations?
It is noon, and it is hot, and Jesus has walked along that rough road. He sits by a well while his disciples go into the village to buy provisions.
A woman comes out for water. What an unusual hour to be drawing water. Early morning, or when the sun goes down, is the time for collecting water.
Jesus, the king of the Jews, asks this Samaritan woman for a drink, and she hesitates. Relationships between these two groups were bad.
Jesus explains that if she knew who it was who was speaking to her she would have asked him for a drink and he would have given her living water.
She points out that he has no bucket to draw water from this deep well.
Anyway, what is living water? It is the water that Jesus Christ gives. It is fresh cool spring water, bouncing and bubbling with life, and he gives not a glassful but a reservoir.
Drink ordinary water and you will become thirsty again.
Drink the living water which Jesus Christ gives and that supernatural reservoir suddenly appears.
Of course, Jesus is referring to the Holy Spirit. He is speaking of the necessity of having spiritual resources for dry barren seasons.
This is the season of Pentecost, fifty days after Jesus rose from the dead, when that first outpouring of the Holy Spirit occurred in the Temple courts.
Pentecost is always available. The gift of the Holy Spirit is not restricted to a special day.
What you drink is important. Some drink can harm you. Some drink can refresh you.
This living water empowers you to help others.
