Word from Nairnshire
by Sandy Shaw
How did Jesus Christ answer Nicodemus’ crucial questions, and how did God love the world?
Jesus always loved to point to the written Word of God, whenever it was possible and relevant. Jesus never had any problem with the Old Testament.
When Moses was leading the Children of Israel, they became distressed and depressed, and they grumbled against God, and against God’s appointed leader, Moses.
“Moses, why have you brought us here? We have no bread! We have no water! We loathe this manna!”
A plague of venomous fiery serpents bit people and many Israelis died.
The people came to Moses confessing that they had sinned against God and against Moses.
“Pray for us that God will take away the snakes.” Moses prayed.
He was told, to put a bronze snake on a pole, and if anyone is bitten, and looks at the bronze snake, he will live.
John, commenting on this pivotal conversation, explains that in just the same way, God acted in love on another occasion, this time for the whole rebellious human race, by sacrificing his one and only Son, so that all who go on trusting and obeying him, might never be ruined beyond recovery, but go on having everlasting and abundant life.
Jesus was nailed to a tree. Jesus was hung up on a pole, and those who look to him and believe, and who go on believing, will live.
Nicodemus, you will see me lifted up and if you look you can be saved.
He did. He saw Jesus lifted up and he was there helping Joseph take down the crucified body of the Son of God.
God does not take away the snakes, or the temptations, but He does provide a way of escape, forgiveness, and salvation.
