Word from Nairnshire
by Sandy Shaw
It was harvest time and David and some of his men were helping out, looking after the land, animals, and belongings of others.
They had to work, pay their way, and make a living. There were no social security benefits under Saul’s kingship.
The boss man, Nabal, was stubborn, greedy and churlish, and would not pay David’s men, although they did not ask for much.
He was of the aristocracy of Judah and knew very little about David.
A great inheritance and pedigree can bring pride, and make a man judgmental and critical of others.
Nabal fell into the trap Moses warned people about.
Do not think it has been your hand that has brought you to where you are. It is God’s grace and goodness.
Wealth had corrupted Nabal. He was so negative and flew up, snarling at David’s men.
If only he had said, “This is wonderful. Everything is safe. Thank you.”
David sought revenge and needed someone to think straight and sort out the potentially violent predicament.
We never know who may need us to think straight, sensibly, and wisely.
Might you be the individual to rescue some serious situation?
Nabal’s wife, Abigail, was a woman of character and decisive action.
She knew she had supplies in her larder for emergencies. With precision she arranged a mountain of produce, sent it off to David and his men, and she followed.
When Abigail met David, she was most gracious, even knowing that one day David would become king.
Was this feminine intuition or Divine revelation and intimation? It is the longest recorded speech of any woman in the Bible.
She allows David the opportunity to save face, giving him a way out.
Any business or union leader could learn much from these three hundred words.
