How can such success result in suffering, antagonism, and danger?

When David floored Goliath there were various repercussions.

News from the battlefield travelled fast and women wrote and sang a new chorus, and King Saul became jealous.

Jealousy is a powerful and dangerous emotion.

David was quickly promoted and that pleased everyone, except Saul who promoted him.

David was gifted with natural talents and abilities, and with the anointing of God upon his life, these attributes would be enhanced and enriched.

A man can be doing his very best for God and king and country, and suddenly he is opposed.

Jesus experienced antagonistic opposition very early in His ministry, and it lasted until His enemies nailed Him to a tree, and then it went on among His disciples, continuing right down to this present day.

King Saul’s son, Jonathan, became a close friend of hero David. If Saul had died Jonathan would have become king, constitutionally speaking, but this prince is prepared to renounce the prospect of the throne to a shepherd boy.

Was this warm friendship not provided by God for David, because he was certainly going to need a friend? They made a covenant with God. God was in this friendship.

When David was embattled, and being hunted by jealous Saul, Jonathan went to help David find strength in God.

A man who has a friend who can be relied upon to strengthen him in Christ is rich.

In the early Church, we read of Peter and John, and Paul, Silas, Luke and Timothy, and each, with their individual temperaments, came from different backgrounds.

Friendship, but even deeper, fellowship, is a gift from God, and in Christ, there is no limit to the beautiful friendships which can exist and flourish irrespective of age, sex or class.
